Pretty pictures is the term we're using in this class to define the style of photography that is popular because of it beauty and comfortable appeal. This style is used by photographers working with both digital and film cameras. The two photographers we are reading about this week are Ansel Adams and Scott Graham. Ansel Adams is one of the most classic landscape photographers. I bet most of you have seen at least one of his photos before, even if you didn't know it. This is a link to a short bio on him.

Scott Graham is a modern photographer who does a lot of his work in this area. His work on the Blueridge parkway is what he is most known for. He still uses a medium format camera for his work. Read his bio and spend a little time checking out his website and looking at his photos:

Hey everyone sorry you will need to copy and paste the links into your address bar. They aren't working if you click directly on them. Sorry, hopefully we can fix this later :)
ReplyDeleteboth of these photographer's have such amazing pictures of the landscape. but i think my question would be anyone can take a picture of the outdoors but how to make it look so amazing and have such emotion in it?
ReplyDeleteDevin Trivette
I personally like Ansel Adam's Photo's a lot better. I like in the mountains and it just seemed like he mostly took those kind of pics. I see that everyday but he still made them look really pretty. But my question is the same as Devin's.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Graham's Photography! i loved the fact that he is local and takes pictures of the amazing sites that surround us. it made me appreciate East TN that much more. i have even heard that he was a founder of Doe River Gorge. how cool is that!
ReplyDeleteI posted already, and it said I wasn't signed in. Round two-
ReplyDeleteI am particularly keen on the clarity essential to the "pretty picture" genre that Graham and Adams both capture in their photographs. It is refreshing to see a clear landscape shot that does not contain a lame inspirational quotation at the bottom. I would lie to know more about the "zone system" mentioned in Adams' biography.

Breath taking! I especially love Ansel Adam's use of contrast. What tips would you give concerning contrast in order to get the dramatic effect that Adam's pictures so often portray?

Ansel Adams has been one of my favorite photographers. I would just love to see where he has been, and to see what he has seen through a lens. I do like many of scott graham's photos as well, I think more of his are mesmorizing because they are in color. Landscapes is my favorite part of photography and I only hope to have one photo as amazing as these. I could look at them for hours
ReplyDeleteIt is very interesting (and obvious) to me that I could probably be in the exact same place, looking at the exact same thing as J. Scott Graham or Ansel Adams, and yet my photgraph would till not be anything near as excellent as theirs. Their visualization is so much better than I believe mine could ever be. -Ben
ReplyDeleteI love Ansel Adams' photos. The level of clarity in his landscapes is breathtaking. The mystery that exists in crisp black & white photos is unlike any other kind of art. He really captures beauty through high contrast levels & visually interesting subject matter. Ok enough nerdiness - they just look really cool.
ReplyDeleteBetter late than never....
ReplyDeleteI've heard the name Ansel Adams for years now, but I didn't know who he really was until this past summer. I was on vacation in California at Yosemite, enjoying one of the most amazing places I've ever been. In the valley they have an Adams gallery, and I was amazed at the clarity of his images and how faithfully he captured the formations. I've always felt that pictures never do nature justice, but Adams' certainly do.
